barry is bacK!

LA///BARRY McGEE IN HOLLYWOODLAND…

Saturday nite at LA’s Roberts & Tilton Gallery saw the opening of the much-anticipated multimedia installation by SF native Barry McGee, aka: TWIST, alongside an ambiguously-titled, but nonetheless first-rate figurative show called “Do Not Stack” featuring work by Patty Chang, Delphine Courtillot, Jonathan Hartshorn, Richard Hawkins, Adam Janes, Chris Johanson, Titus Kaphar, Thomas Kiesewetter, Euan Macdonald, Faris McReynolds, Aaron Romine, Dana Schutz, Jeff Sonhouse, Ed Templeton, Richard Tuttle, Aya Uekawa, Kehinde Wiley, and Ai Yamaguchi. As usual, “TWISTO” did not disappoint, bringing a large selection of new work featuring his iconic character portraits mixed in with an endless supply of his newer “Q-Bert”-style colorblock paintings and Kaleidoscopic video displays in the gallery’s loft. Meanwhile, back on ground level an impressive array of artists proved that figurative art is very much alive and well in LA with an incredibly accessible and diverse array of work. Drop by before December 22nd, and bring your checkbook…

Along for the ride were fellow exhibiting artists Faile, Kelsey Brooks, Invader, Dolk, and Insect, to name a few, who filled the temporary art space at 15 Oxford street with a staggering array of first-class work (almost all with a sharp-tongued satirical slant) just in time for the holiday buying season. Curated by art collective Pictures on Walls, the show will remain on display through the end of the year…
